Flow Science, Inc. announces the availability of a new release of its FLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. Version 9.4 of FLOW-3D offers a powerful new Core Gas Generation casting model, a greater breadth of modeling capabilities across a spectrum of industrial applications and post-processing improvements for ease-of-use. The new core gas model in FLOW-3D Version 9.4 describes the generation of gas in sand cores during the pouring and cooling of metal. The gas comes from the decomposition of the sand binder due to the heat coming from the metal. The model is based on first principles and aims at capturing in detail the heat transfer between metal and mold, binder pyrolysis and the flow of gas within the core, and its venting at the core’s external surfaces.
An essential part of developing the new core gas model was to use real-world data to verify the numeric results of the model. AlchemCast and GM provided Flow Science with experimental data that was used to develop and then validate the new model. Since the early stages of model development, project leaders from GM and Caterpillar used beta versions of the model to test and help refine and verify the results. These efforts have greatly enhanced the accuracy of the model and proven its use and reliability in the foundry.
