Foundry tooling giant Ditemsa celebrated the recent FundiExpo exhibition with the signing of a $6.1m order for foundry tooling for the world leader in aluminium head and block castings. The contract is to manufacture 42 coreboxes to produce two variations of a V8 cylinder block by the low pressure sand cast process.
The order is testament to the trust placed in the company thanks to on-going investment in people and equipment, says Ditemsa’s business development manager Haydn Parkin. “We’ve put in a lot of investment and are committed to continue this trend to meet our objective of becoming the world’s leading toolmaker,” he told Foundry Trade Journal. “FundiExpo (held in conjunction with the World Foundry Congress in Monterrey) was a good show for us. It’s a good opportunity to meet up with existing customers and display our capabilities to potential customers.”
Established in 1979 and based in Saltillo, Coahuila (Mexico), Ditemsa is already one of the top five foundry toolmakers in the world with customers based on home soil, in the United States and globally. So the quest to be number one should come as no surprise and it is certainly more of an achievable objective rather than a pipedream.
The company’s promotional literature boasts that “employees are our most important assets” which Haydn Parkin confirms is an important company philosophy. “We are a world-class foundry toolmaker because everyone at the company strives for excellence. We invest in the best equipment and the best people and we value practical skills and on-going training as much as the latest technologies. For example our CAD designers are all experienced pattern or mould makers. ”
The main plant in Mexico is backed by support in the U.S, Europe and the Far East. The company’s strong knowledge of all foundry processes for grey iron and aluminium casting means they can undertake a wide range of projects whether for grey iron cylinder head or block programmes, semi-permanent moulds and coreboxes for aluminium cylinder heads or high pressure moulds. The latest state-of-the-art technology and the vast amount of foundry-specific knowledge and experience in-house has resulted in the company having plenty of capacity for large projects such as the one it has just won.
The company claims to have a tooling service that is “difficult to beat anywhere in the world”, a confident declaration that can be proved by the high level of investments made in recent years. A $4m investment in 4-axes and high speed machining centres sees Ditemsa house: three horizontal machining centres, 16 high speed CNC machining centres and one vertical CNC machining centre standing proud next to eight bed-type CNC milling machines, three lathes, four CNC electro discharge machines, a surface grinder and a deep hold drilling machine. All supported by a co-ordinate measuring machine and the latest GOM photo scanning inspection facilities.
An investment in people has left the company with the ability to design any foundry tool from concept to production whether it is for cast iron or aluminum, gravity, low pressure or high pressure injection. There is also a team of employees responsible for plastic tooling who are experienced in all types of moulds, from multi-shot to complex enclosure moulds and automotive parts.
With CAD systems utilising the latest hardware and software and mirroring customer systems, complete compatibility is ensured and data communication is possible all over the world by means of the latest information protocols.
The vast range and variety of design, machining and inspection facilities has helped Ditemsa optimise its production processes to achieve high quality with a minimum time frame and cost implications for customers.
A practical goal to be the world-leader matched with genuine investment to make this happen and the inherent ability to undertake projects from conceptual part design through to production has seen Ditemsa grow into a foundry tooling giant. The company is far from one which just supplies the Mexican and North American markets, it is a global player and has the people and the capabilities to match anything offered anywhere else in the world.
