Century Aluminum Co. announced that its wholly owned subsidiary completed a transaction with Rio Tinto Alcan to acquire substantially all of the assets of the Sebree aluminum smelter. The smelter, located in Henderson County, Ky., employs more than 500 people and has an annual production capacity of 205,000 metric tons of primary aluminum. Century Aluminum's facility in Hawesville is approximately 60 miles from the Sebree smelter. The Chicago-based company, which owns primary aluminum capacity in the U.S. and Iceland, sees an opportunity for the facilities to work together and share best practices in pursuit of safety and operational excellence.
