A Boom in Chinese Foundry Industry.

China’s economy maintained a steady and rapid development throughout the thirty-year period since the launch of the reform and opening-up policy. China has secured the top in the output of castings throughout the nine-year period. The overall output of Chinese castings in 2008 was 33.5 million tons, which was equal to the total output of castings in U.S.A, Russia, India and Japan and accounted for 1/3 of total output of castings in the world. In China, the consumption share of castings is as follows: 18.2% for automobile, 13.7% for internal-combustion engine and agriculture, 13.1% for mining industry and heavy machine, 10.4% for pipes and fittings, 9.9% for general engineering, 9.3% for Machine and tools, 5.1% for rail vehicles, 5.1% for power equipment, 1.8% for shipping industry, 1.2% for textile machine and others account for 12.2%.
Since the last quarter in 2008, Chinese government dramatically increased the investment on infrastructure. In particular, the State Council passed the Adjustment and Development Plan of Ten Top Industries, including iron and steel, automobile, equipment manufacturing industry, shipping, petrochemical, light industry, logistics and so on. All those industries are closely related with foundry industry, providing a broad space for the development of the industry. With the rapid development of national economy, there are higher requirements for the industry, such as automobile, energy, shipping, petrochemical and aerospace as well as the large and heavy castings. With the launch of Three Gorges Project, the projects to send electricity and oil from China’s western region to the eastern region, large plane project and the project of rejuvenation of the old industrial base in northeast China, there are broad market prospects for Chinese heavy castings. China Foundry Association (CFA) holds two exhibitions: the Non-Ferrous & Special Casting in odd years and METALCHINA in even years. In 2009, 7th Non-Ferrous & Special Casting will be held on 1-3 Sep. 2009 in Shanghai and METAL CHINA 2010 will be held on 11-14 May. 2010 in Beijing. These two exhibitions will strongly show the rapid development and the dramatic achievement of Chinese foundry industry in all respects.
With the sustainable and rapid development of industrialization and urbanization in China, mechanical and electrical exports are increasing. Chinese casting consumption will continue to rise for a long time in the future. It is predicted that after the adjustment in 2009, despite the enhancement of casing precision and thicker walls of castings, the output of Chinese castings will exceed 35 million tons in 2010.
China is the biggest foundry country, but it is not powerful. There is still a long way for us to catch up with U.S.A, Germany, Japan in technology, ideology of sustainable development, management and the quality of personnel. From the biggest manufacturing country to the most powerful one, and from the biggest economic country to the greatest one, Chinese foundry industry must develop into a powerful one.
Commissioned by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China, China Foundry Association is drafting the Admission Rules for Chinese foundry industry. The purpose of the admission rules is to rescind some backward technique and equipments and close down some foundries with high pollution and high energy consumption, following by the laws on tax, environment protection, labor and safety as well as by the market competition system. Chinese foundries are working hard to improve the independent innovation capacity, technology and to enhance the quality of castings. In addition, the circular economy and foundry cluster are developed. We are updating and optimizing the products structure and adjusting the foundry structure. We are striving to make Chinese foundry industry develop from the biggest into the powerful one.
