Mechanical engineer William "Al" Hunter invented a gravity-filled automated matchplate molding machine in 1963, the first HMP-10. The new machine streamlined laborious metal casting processes. With it, an operator reportedly could produce as many molds in one hour as most molders could produce in an entire day on a jolt-squeeze machine. The following year, he launched Hunter Automated Machinery Corp.
Today known as Hunter Foundry Machinery Corp., Schaumburg, Ill., the company has grown its reputation for advanced matchplate molding and mold handling solutions for the metalcasting industry. Hunter has sales offices in the U.S., India, China, Brazil and Europe.
