Alcoa to Supply Fan-Blade Forgings.

In a $1.1 billion agreement with Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp., Alcoa will supply the forgings for the first-ever aluminum fan blade for geared turbofan (GTF) jet engines. The forging was developed using an advanced aluminum alloy and a proprietary manufacturing process. Alcoa is also developing a fan-blade forging using its most advanced aluminum-lithium alloy.
The goal of creating lighter blades at the front end of a GTF engine is reduced cost and improved fuel efficiency. According to Klaus Kleinfeld, Alcoa's Chairman and CEO, Alcoa will deliver not only aluminum fan-blade forgings but also a range of other advanced product forms - from blades and vanes to structural castings.
