USA - Navistar Shutters Indianapolis Casting Facility

Issued at 2015-07-31

Navistar International, Lisle, Ill., closed its metalcasting operation in Indianapolis June 30. Announced in December 2014, the closing is expected to reduce costs by $13 million a year.

The workforce at the 60-acre facility, which produced engine blocks and heads for Navistar engines, has been cut from 160 employees to just 20. The company will turn to suppliers to acquire the necessary engine castings.

"Closing a facility is a difficult decision because of its impact on the many great people who've been part of our company," said Persio Lisboa, president of operations, when announcing the closing. "We will treat people with dignity and respect throughout this process."

The metalcasting facility ceased pouring operations last week. Navistar spokesman Steve Schrier said the company has yet to decide what will happen to the site.
