Brazil pig iron exports hit lowest level in six months

According to statistics provided by the Brazilian Ministry of Development and Foreign Trade, the country’s pig iron exports during the month of October this year declined considerably when compared on month-on-month and year-on-year basis.
Brazil’s pig iron exports totaled 159,766 tons during October ’15. The total exports dropped heavily by 56.7% from the previous month. The country’s pig iron exports had totaled 369,283 tons during the month of September this year. When compared with the exports during the same month a year before, the October ’15 pig iron exports were down by 54.2%. Brazil had exported 348,834 mt of pig iron during October last year.
The primary destination of Brazilian pig iron exports during Oct ’15 was the US. The country imported 61,709 tons of pig iron from Brazil during the month. The exports to the country were down by 77% from the same month a year before. In second place was Mexico with 34,325 tons, followed by the Netherlands with 29,326 tons.
The pig iron exports by the country during the initial ten months of the year totaled 2.269 million tons. The imports during the period were higher by 9% when compared with the imports during the corresponding ten-month period in 2014. The pig iron exports by Brazil had totaled 2.081 million tons during Jan-Oct ’14.
The largest destination of Brazilian exports during Jan-Oct ’15 was the US. The exports to the US totaled 1.353 million tons, accounting for 59.6% share of total pig iron exports by Brazil during this period. The exports to the US dropped 12% year-on-year. The second largest importer was the Netherlands with 232,398 tons. The other key importers of Brazilian pig iron were Mexico (197,006 tons), Taiwan (157,788 tons) and Italy (80,536 tons).
