NBS: China's 2018 pig iron output up 3% on year

China's output of pig iron in 2018 increased by 3% year on year to 771.05 million tonnes, a new historical high, according to the latest data from China's National Bureau of Statistics published on January 21. Significantly, growth in pig iron output was less than half the 6.3% on-year surge in the country's crude steel output to 928.26 million tonnes, also a record high, the NBS data showed.
Throughout much of 2018, checks of environmental facilities conducted by local governments at steel works frequently led to production curbs being in place, which limited the level of capacity utilization among blast furnaces, a market insider said.
