Volvo launches green castings for engines

Volvo Group in India has launched the its first eco-friendly castings that will go into building its engines. This sets online with their commitment to become a climate neutral company by 2040 which also includes its supply chain and global suppliers from India.

These green castings, which will be produced by Brakes India, using scrap, alloys, and raw materials that are 100 percent radioactive-free. According to the company, the process of making these castings involves recycling of 100 percent metallic scrap generated by other industries to manufacture a usable product. “The plant will operate on 100 percent green power from solar and wind energy. This will eliminate the use of diesel with an electric ladle preheater, a solution developed with AFECO India. This will also result in the elimination of pig iron, which is produced in a blast furnace with coal,” it said.

The commercial production of these green castings will start from this month and will include bearing caps and bearing housing for select Volvo engines. The use for castings for these two parts translates to 8500 tons CO2 reduction for Volvo. The castings being produced in India are certified by the Confederation of Indian Industry - Green Products & Services Council.
