Manufacturing company MacLean Power Systems bought Dotson Iron Castings, and with the acquisition comes Dotson’s Mankato headquarters at 200 W. Rock St.
Fort Mill, South Carolina-based MPS bought the building at 200 W. Rock St. for $10.53 million, according to a recently published certificate of real estate value. MPS announced in a press release that it finalized the acquisition of Dotson on Friday.
MPS dubs itself “a leading manufacturer of products for transmissions, distribution, substation, and communications infrastructure.” Dotson is a ductile iron foundry that has been in business for over a century.
“As an existing vendor to MPS, our partnership with Dotson has flourished over the last several years,” MPS CEO Steve Scharnhorst said in a press release. “Dotson’s excellent performance as a supplier, including the quality of their product, and best-in-class foundry process are really what drove us to this partnership.”
Dotson currently supplies transmission hardware and other materials to MPS facilities in Alabama and South Carolina. MPS customers will “benefit from shorter lead times and increased production capacity in these rapidly growing market segments,” the release said.
Scharnhorst noted that Dotson’s talented and knowledgeable team is the greatest advantage to the acquisition.
“This acquisition accelerates our vertical integration strategy, allowing us to serve our customers’ needs more effectively and continue to expand our ability to provide a growing number of American manufactured products,” he said in the release.
Dotson’s website says it produces 120 tons of ductile iron each day. Ductile iron is a durable, flexible group of irons often used for pipes in water and sewer lines. It’s also used in many automotive pieces.
The company was started in 1876 by Laurence Mayer, a German immigrant blacksmith who brought his family to Mankato. The current building is just 300 feet from where Mayer first established the business.
MPS is “dedicated to keeping power infrastructure performing optimally” and provides products to fulfill that goal, according to the press release. The company serves customers worldwide and operates in the U.S., Canada, South America, Asia and Europe. It was founded in 1986.
Dotson CEO Tyson Twait will join MPS as vice president and general manager of Mankato operations.
Dotson will continue to operate in Mankato and Scharnhorst added in the release, “We look forward to investing in the workplace and workforce located in Mankato.”
