International companies eye acquisition of Brazilian aluminum producer CBA
Tweet
China’s Chinalco and the United Arab Emirates conglomerate Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) are assessing the acquisition of control of Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio (CBA).
In addition to the two companies, Alcoa and Rio Tinto also analyzed the asset, according to the newspaper Valor Econômico. However, only Chinalco and EGA have expressed interest, according to the newspaper, which attributed the information to sources close to the discussions.
Contacted by BNamericas, CBA has not yet made any comment.
Recently, CBA, part of the Votorantim industrial conglomerate, hired investment firm Moelis to advise on the sale of a minority or majority stake in its Rondon bauxite project.
As potential investors evaluated the project, some identified opportunities to acquire control of the company as a whole.
CBA has faced an adverse scenario in recent quarters, amid falling aluminum prices.
The company reported a loss of 73 million (mn) reais (US$14mn) in the second quarter, compared to a loss of 74mn reais in the same period in 2024. Net revenue totaled 2 billion (bn) reais, a 3% reduction compared to 2Q24, according to recent company data.
Given this context, the company has encountered difficulties in raising new resources and financing the Rondon project, which, according to estimates, will require investments of around US$2.5bn to be developed.
