Foundry industry facing acute shortage of Skilled & Trained Manpower.

New Delhi: With the demand for castings steadily increasing, the foundry industry is facing acute shortage of skilled & trained manpower. There is need to have more training facilities specially near the foundry clusters. The Institute of Indian Foundrymen (IIF) has informed that the situation is likely to worsen as the demand of castings is likely to go up.

The Ministry of Steel has collected information from Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) and the Institute of Indian Foundrymen (IIF) in this regard.

According to data provided by the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) to the Ministry of Steel, the total production of castings (including Grey C.I., SG Iron, Malleable, Steel and Non ferrous castings) in India totalled 7.4432 Million Tonnes in 2009-10, generating a cumulative estimated turnover of Rs. 44,000 crores.

In 2008-09, the foundry industry in India produced 6.8405 Million Tonnes of castings, generating a cumulative estimated turnover of Rs. 33,000 crores, which was affected due to the global slowdown. In 2007-08 the number was 7.7711 Million Tonnes with an estimated turnover of Rs. 39,000 crores.

The foundry industry is the key feeder to all engineering sectors including auto, auto components, railways, power, cement, textile machinery, sanitary castings, earthmoving machinery etc.
